"As a first-generation Asian American and enlisted veteran in my family, this scholarship holds deep meaning for me and my family, especially my dad, who has always been my guiding light. My family’s journey to this country was built on sacrifice and hard work, and serving in the military was my way of honoring those values and giving back to the opportunities we’ve been given. This scholarship represents not just financial support, but a recognition of my service and the dreams my dad and I have worked so hard for. It motivates me to keep striving, knowing I am making him proud while paving the way for a better future for my family and others like us."

My name is Carole Mae Sanchez, and I am a Registered Nurse and a proud veteran of the U.S. Air National Guard, where I served as a Bioenvironmental Engineering Technician and Air Force Reserves, where I then serve as Aerospace Medical Technician (Medic). These roles gave me a strong foundation in public health and emergency response, as well as a deep understanding of the importance of teamwork and resilience in high-stakes environments. My military service taught me discipline, adaptability, and attention to detail—qualities that have shaped my career in nursing and continue to guide me every day.
After completing my Bachelor of Science in Nursing, cum laude, from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, I began my journey as an emergency room nurse. In my previous role at CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Medical Center and currently at San Antonio Regional Hospital, I work with both pediatric and adult populations, drawing on my military background to stay calm under pressure and respond quickly and effectively in life-threatening situations. My experience with emergency protocols and patient care has prepared me to handle everything from critical trauma cases to compassionate end-of-life care, ensuring the best outcomes for my patients.
In addition to my clinical experience, my goal is to specialize in dermatology, areas that align with my skills and passion for hands-on, precision-based care. Outside of work, I keep a balanced life through hobbies like playing guitar, kickboxing, and swimming. These activities keep me grounded and maintain the focus needed for my demanding roles.
A scholarship would allow me to further develop my skills, bringing me closer to my goal of specializing in hands-on fields that demand focus and dedication. I am honored to be considered for this opportunity and am eager to continue making a difference in the lives of my patients and within the scope field of healthcare.
